IMPORTANT UPDATE – Rabbit Calicivirus

Mar 2, 2017

There has been much news coverage about the risk of the new Rabbit Calicivirus

There are in fact two new strains that can soon pose a grave threat to pet rabbits all over Australia.

Firstly the department of Agriculture will be releasing a new strain (K5) to try and control wild rabbit populations.

Secondly there has also been a wild strain called RCDV type 2, which has been recently detected in the ACT, NSW, VIC and most recently Metropolitan Melbourne.

The Current CYCLAP rabbit vaccine we routinely use has been shown to protect against the new government released strain, but not as well against the Type 2 virus

VACCINATE TO PROTECT.

There is no current vaccine for Type 2 available in Australia, but there is thought to be some cross protection from the currently used Vaccine for Type 1.

The protocols have been revised to try and minimize the risk.

If you Bunny has not been vaccinated, or is overdue then please contact the clinic for further advice.
