The holidays are here and while many of you are leaving your pets with house sitters or in kennels, you may choose to take your furry friend with you. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but does need a lot of planning.
- Is your pet healthy? Road trips and travel can be stressful, and unwell animals won’t cope as well as healthy ones.
- Is your pet on medication? Do you have enough to last for the whole trip? The same questions apply if your pet has special dietary needs.
- Are your pet’s vaccinations and parasite control up to date? This is particularly important if you’re going interstate or overseas – the vaccinations and products you use might not be enough to combat foreign parasites and viruses. Some interstate parasites like paralysis ticks can be deadly, and you might not be using the right cover. Check with a vet to find out what kind of nasties you need to prevent.
- Pets can be disoriented and get lost in unfamiliar areas, so make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date, and an ID tag on the collar can be useful if your pet goes astray.
- If your pet has stayed in the city its whole life it may have never come across a snake before – potentially a deadly situation if your pet decides to try and play. Supervise your pets outdoors and know where the nearest emergency vet is if an accident happens.
- Pets get travel sick too! Some dogs and cats get anxious and nauseous in the car, making for a miserable trip. We can help! Travel sickness and anti-anxiety medications exist for pets, and can make a trip much happier.
Happy travels!
