There are new restrictions placed on certain human medications which are used for animals.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic it is predicted that several of these medications could be needed in ever increasing numbers and possibly result in a short supply. We therefore understand the reason for the restrictions, which will ensure they go to the people that need them the most.
Veterinarians will no longer be allowed to prescribe the human version of the following medications for animal use:
- Gabapentin (pain relief medication)
- Fluoxetine (“Prozac”; anti-anxiety medication)
These two medications are vital to maintaining the well-being and quality of life for many of our patients. Thankfully we have been able to source a veterinary compounding pharmacist who will be able to make these up for each of our patients when required. The animal specific compounded medication will be safe and effective meaning your pet can continue to receive the treatment they need.
If your pet is on any of these we will need to organize a special order for your pets specific dosage. It can take at least 5 days for the medication to be available for pick up so please make sure you let us know well before you are due to run out of your current supply.
We will let you know if there are any other medications that will be affected.
