We are aware of several syndicated articles recently published by media outlets in Australia alleging that Beransa has, or may have, caused fatalities in canine patients. We would like to reassure pet owners that Beransa has undergone robust testing is a safe and effective treatment for controlling osteoarthritis (OA) pain in dogs. Zoetis who manufacture Beransa continues to stand firmly behind the safety and efficacy of Beransa and its ability to help dogs suffering from OA to live with less pain and greater mobility. We recognise that these media articles may raise some concerns for pet owners whose dogs have received Beransa and we would like to offer the following information to help alleviate any concerns that may arise.
- Beransa has undergone robust testing and has been approved as safe and effective for controlling osteoarthritis pain in dogs by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority in Australia.
- Over 25 million doses of Beransa have been distributed globally, with no individual adverse event sign having had been reported at a rate higher than 1 occurrence per 10,000 doses. This demonstrates the product’s strong safety profile. and as with approved medicines, side effects are extremely rare.
- Globally, regulatory environments differ and some governments require adverse effects to be listed as a side effect irrespective of whether causality is indicated. This can lead to discrepancies between countries’ labels, but simply reflects a different approach to communication around medicines.
- Severe illness with sudden onset can and does occur in older patients irrespective of treatments they are receiving, and in many cases may be unrelated and coincidental to treatment.
- Zoetis reports all adverse events to the relevant regulator regardless of causality or link to a product. This reflects how seriously we take any possible adverse events.
- Osteoarthritis is a severely disabling and painful disease and dogs with OA need very effective and safe pain relief, which Beransa is able to provide.
