THE CANINE ITCH CYCLE
1. Allergens in the Environment (pollen, grass)
2. Allergens enter the body by penetrating the damaged skin
3. Immune reaction – Dogs immune system reacts to the allergen
4. . Release of Messenger Proteins known as cytokines that trigger the itch
5. Nerves are activated by the messenger proteins
6. Itch signal is transmitted to the dog’s brain saying “I’m Itchy”
7. Itch signal triggers a scratch respons. Scratching causes further damage. The itch cycle continues!. In some dogs the Itch signal can also trigger licking, chewing rubbing and head shaking
